April was much drier than normal over nearly all of New Mexico. Temperatures,
on the other hand, were close to normal over most of the state. A chilly
first half of April turned much warmer during the last two weeks of the
month.
Early April featured strong and gusty winds, leading
to critical fire weather conditions on the 1st through 3rd and on the
5th.
Back door cold
fronts on the 1st and 3rd sent temperatures on a roller coaster ride over
the eastern plains early in the month. The first significant storm of the
month delivered strong winds, rain and snow to the state on the 9th and
10th. A weaker disturbance affected north central and northeast New Mexico
on the 11th into the early hours of the 12th. A much more significant storm
impacted the state from the 12th through 14th; wind statewide on the
12th and 13th and snow over the north and east on the 14th. A very similar
storm system brought wind to the state on the 15th and 16th, followed by
some snow over the northeast on the 17th. Strong winds returned from the
20th through 26th, with the exceptions of the 22nd and 25th, creating critical
fire weather
conditions. Dry weather with less wind prevailed on the 27th through 29th,
while the end of month produced more wind and critical fire weather conditions
on the 30th. |
