ABRFC's Student Career Experience Program

The ABRFC is not accepting new SCEP applications at this time.

The Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) is a paid internship for college students through the National Weather Service (NWS). The NWS teams up with a college or university to allow students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience under the guidance and direction of a university. Students are required to complete at least 640 hours of work with the ABRFC prior to graduation. Most full-time students work summers or alternate semesters between SCEP work with the NWS and attending classes at the university; however special work schedules can be coordinated under unique circumstances. College credit may be given for work with the NWS based on the specific requirements of the university.

Upon completion of the required work hours and graduation, the SCEP student may be offered a full-time, career-conditional position within the NWS on a non-competitive bid basis. However, there is no guarantee that a position will be offered.

Eligibility Requirements
  • MUST BE A U.S. CITIZEN
  • Working toward a degree that would qualify the student for full-time employment with the National Weather Service upon graduation. (Includes both undergraduate and graduate programs. Common majors include hydrology, civil engineering, water resources, meteorology, geology, geography, climatology, or closely related disciplines.)
  • Be able to complete at least 640 hours of work with the ABRFC prior to graduation.
