Georgia Weather History for July 31st

In 2002, severe thunderstorms moved across parts of north and central Georgia during the afternoon causing over a half million dollars in damage. Hail close to 1 inch and damaging winds were common during this event, however most of the damage came from lightning. In Swainsboro (Emmanuel County), lightning struck several homes and the Hillcrest Baptist Church. The church was completely destroyed by the resulting fire. In Cumming (Forsyth County) lightning struck a home in the Gran Forest subdivision completely destroying the home due to the resulting fire.
