MARCH-MAY 2004 - DRIEST EVER IN ATHENS

May continued to be especially dry in the Athens area. While the 1.35 inches of rainfall Athens received during the month was not the lowest total rainfall for May (it ranked 13th... 0.11 inches in 1914 setting the record for driest May on record), it was only 34% of their normal 3.86 inches. May Rainfall Percentage of Normal


The three-month period from March 1 to May 31 was the driest ever March through May period for Athens...the third driest at Columbus...the 4th driest at Atlanta...and the 7th driest at Macon.

Total... 3.27 inches. Old record was 4.94 inches in 1921.
Columbus...
Total... 6.71 inches. Driest March-May period was in 1995 with 5.51 inches.
Atlanta...
Total... 6.44 inches. Driest March-May period was in 1887 with 5.13 inches.
Macon...
Total... 4.55 inches. Driest March-May period was in 1914 with 3.16 inches.

Much of Georgia continues to experience below-normal rainfall. The year-to-date rainfall across north and central Georgia is running from 47% to 71% of normal.
