Second Driest July on Record in Macon
8/2/04

Macon recorded just 0.66 inches of rain during the month of July 2004. This is the the second lowest amount ever recorded at that location. The driest July was in 1986 when only 0.37 inches was measured. Prior to this year the second driest amount was 1.15 inches which occurred in 1901.

Although some other locations were also much drier than normal, there were no records set. This is how the month shaped up for major cities...
  • Atlanta... 2.20 inches, or less than 50 percent of normal
  • Athens... 1.84 inches, or less than 50 percent of normal
  • Columbus... 4.58 inches, which is near normal

The rainfall deficit for the year to date across the state looks like this.
