It appears much of Georgia is falling back into the grips of a long term drought.
Abnormally dry conditions plaguing the state in recent years eased during the first
half of 2001 as heavier and more frequent rainfall returned. But, over the past few months,
rainfall has become increasingly sparse. Rainfall deficits since September 1 are shown below:
Departure from Normal
September 1 thru November 19
Atlanta... -5.75
Athens.... -6.89
Columbus.. -2.88
Macon..... +0.20
Average rainfall in November is normally in excess of 3 inches. Through the 20th,
there had been NO measurable rainfall in Atlanta and Athens, and only a few hundredths
of an inch at many other locations across northern and central sections of the state.
The record for the driest November in Atlanta is 0.18 inches (1890).
The table below summarizes the month for these four locations:
Rainfall - November 2001 (thru 11/20/01) |
| Location | Total for the month | Record lowest amount for the month | Year record occurred |
| Columbus | 0.03 | 0.31 | 1948 |
| Atlanta | trace | 0.18 | 1890 |
| Athens | trace | 0.33 | 1948 |
