AUGUST 2002 - ONE OF GEORGIA'S DRIEST AT SOME LOCATIONS
Athens...
The total rainfall for the month was just 0.14 inch...making August 2002 the second driest on record. The record for the month is 0.09 which occurred in 1951.
Atlanta...
Total rainfall in Atlanta was only 0.77 inch, making the month the third driest August on record. The driest August was 1925 when only 0.02 was measured. The second driest was in 1976 when the total was only 0.50.
Columbus...
Columbus measured 1.87 inches of rain for the month. This was the tenth driest on record, and well below the climatic average of 3.78 inches.
Macon...
Macon received rainfall late in the month which ran the total up to 2.74 inches. Although nowhere near a record, this is still 1.05 inches below normal.
