90 - DEGREE TEMPS ARRIVE EARLIER IN 2004 THAN IN 2003
by Robert Beasley and Phil Grigsby
updated 5/7/04

It was unusually wet and cool during the early months of Spring last year. This year, North and Central Georgia are experiencing a complete reversal of the weather pattern. Abnormally dry conditions have persisted for the last several months...allowing temperatures to soar to June-like levels in early May. This is even more evident aloft, as we note that a July-like upper level ridge of high pressure is parked over the area.

Comparing 2003 with 2004... first dates of 90-degree temps...
Athens...
This year... 90 on May 7. In 2003... 90 on June 25. (Normal...May 18.)
Macon...
This year... 91 on April 24. In 2003... 90 on May 9. (Normal...May 4.)
Columbus...
This year... 91 on May 7. In 2003... 90 on May 31. (Normal...May 10.)

Even though Atlanta has not reached 90 degrees this year, and didn't last year until July 8th, it has already been significantly warmer than it was at this time last year. Today's (May 7) maximum temperature of 86 degrees was not observed last year until May 31.
