Near Record Heat in Georgia Eases

Thermometer Near record heat Tuesday, August 6 was pushed out of the state Wednesday. A cold front ushered in a cooler mass of air that resulted in afternoon high temperatures that were about 10 degrees lower.

On Tuesday, Athens and Atlanta were suffering through the hottest weather of the year. Afternoon highs were 99 and 97 degrees respectively. In comparison, Wednesday's afternoon highs were 87 in Atlanta and 90 in Athens.

Cooler air continued to spread into Georgia Wednesday night. By Thursday morning (Aug 8) temperatures had fallen to near record levels in some areas. In fact, Macon did set a new record for the date with a low temperature of 61 degrees (previous record low was 64). In Athens the mercury fell to 60 degrees - just one degree shy of the record.
