Persistent and occasionally heavy rain fell across much of North Georgia during the first 22 days of May ... especially in the northwestern counties. Amounts recorded in gauges and estimated by radar were well above normal and resulted in periods of flooding. The 9-plus inches measured in Atlanta has already amounted to the largest amount ever recorded during the month of May. Rainfall during the Memorial Day Weekend pushed the total to 9.94 inches. The previous record largest amount for the month of May was 9.89 inches (1923). Normal for the month is 3.95 inches.
