Notes: The base of the stratocumulus may be at the same level as the cumulus or it may be at different levels.
"Bases at the same level" occurs when statocuimulus forms as the base of the cumulus cloud spreads horizontally.
"Bases at different levels" occurs when the rising updraft in a cumulus clouds reaches a stable layer in the atmosphere and the updraft is generally too weak to penetrate. As a result, stratoculmulus clouds develop as the top of the cumulus cloud spreads horizontally.
