Severe Weather Definitions

Severe Thunderstorm – an intense thunderstorm containing winds over 50 knots (58 mph)and/or hail of penny size (.75" in diameter) or larger.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch – issued when conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms to develop. 

Severe Thunderstorm Warning – issued when a severe thunderstorm is either detected by radar or is reported. 

Flash Flood Watch – issued when conditions are favorable for flash flooding to develop. 

Flash Flood Warning – issued when flash flooding is detected by radar or is reported. 

Tornado Watch – issued when conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop. 

Tornado Warning – issued when a tornado is detected by radar or is reported.

An EF2 Tornado severely damaged this home southeast of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, early on the morning of February 13, 2007. 

The tornadoes of February 13, 2007, were among the first in the National Weather Service to be rated using the new Enhanced Fujita Scale.
