...January Rainfall Near Normal Across the Mid Gulf South...
Rainfall averaged 4 to 6 inches over the Lake Pontchartrain drainage rivers, over the Mississippi gulf Drainage and over southwest Mississippi. That 4 to 6 inch rainfall is near the monthly normals for those areas. In contrast, rainfall was about two inches below normal for most of southeast Mississippi, the Mississippi River, Atchafalya and Bayou laFourche basins.
Most rivers in the area remained at low flow during the month. The only exceptions were as follows: 1. The Mississippi river at Red River Landing which was in minor flood at the end of December and fell below the 48 foot flood stage on January 1;
2. The Atchafalaya at Morgan City remained above the 4 foot flood stage from late December to mid January the result of being at near the mouth of the river and under the effect of tidal action; and 3. The Lower Pearl River at Bogalusa which went into minor flood on January 26 and which was sustained into February. All three of those events were minor in scope with river traffic and riparian industry being affected by nuisance flooding.
