Severe Weather on January 7-8, 2008 (Pg2)
 
A cold front pushed into Arkansas during the morning of 01/08/2008. Between 8 and 9 am CST on the 8th, the front barreled into Arkansas. Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms were noted along the front, with one storm becoming severe just northeast of Russellville (Pope County).

The WSR-88D (Doppler Weather Radar) showed a tornadic storm tracking from eastern Pope County into northwestern Conway County between 822 and 839 am CST on 01/08/2008.

As the storm moved quickly (50 to 60 mph) to the northeast, rotation increased markedly with a Tornado Warning issued by the National Weather Service in Little Rock. A tornado was spawned from eastern Pope County into northwestern Conway County and southwestern Van Buren County. 

 

Dozens of structures were damaged or destroyed and numerous trees were downed. There was one fatality in a mobile home near Appleton (Pope County) and at least two injuries. The WSR-88D (Doppler Weather Radar) showed strong rotation just southeast of Appleton (Pope County) at 839 am CST on 01/08/2008.

Severe weather reports on January 7-8, 2008. Just before the front exited the state (late afternoon of the 8th), more isolated tornadoes were spawned in eastern Arkansas. About 5 miles south of Osceola (Mississippi County), people were trapped in their home and semi trucks were overturned by a tornado.

Other than severe weather on the 8th, wind gusts around the front were over 30 mph...with some gusts between 40 and 50 mph. The front was followed by much colder air, with temperatures in the 20s and 30s by the morning of the 9th.

Damage Survey/Pictures
A tornado (rated EF2) was spawned from around Moreland (Pope County) northeast to near Appleton (Pope County), Jerusalem (Conway County) and Beverage Town (Van Buren County). The tornado tracked just over 20 miles. A tornado (rated EF2) tracked from eastern Pope County into northwestern Conway County and southwestern Van Buren County on 01/08/2008.

Damaging straight-line winds (60 to 70 mph) destroyed a newly constructed home about 2.7 miles east-southeast of Pettus (Lonoke County).
