While no deaths were reported in Arkansas, that was not
the case farther west. A long track killer tornado (rated EF4) claimed the lives of
at least twenty people in eastern Oklahoma and southwest Missouri. Most of the
fatalities occurred at Picher, OK and Racine, MO. |
| In the
picture: The surface map showed warmth (temperatures in the 70s/80s) and
moisture (dewpoints in the 60s/70s) pooling around an intensifying storm
system ("L") at 4 pm CDT on 05/10/2008. Supercells (storms
with rotating updrafts) were triggered and a killer tornado was spawned
from southeast Kansas into northeast Oklahoma and southwest Missouri. |

Surveys |
|
| Crews from the National Weather Service in Little Rock
(Pulaski County) surveyed damage to determine how
many tornadoes occurred, and how strong the tornadoes were. Six
tornadoes were counted. |
|
| One tornado
(rated EF1) affected areas from 3.5 miles southeast of Humnoke (Lonoke
County) to 9 miles southwest of Fairmont (Prairie County). A more
significant tornado (rated EF3) tracked from 2.5 miles west of Stuttgart
(Arkansas County) to 3.4 miles northeast of Almyra (Arkansas County). |
 |
| In the
picture: Two tornadoes (rated EF1 and EF3) tracked through portions of Lonoke,
Prairie, and Arkansas Counties on 05/10/2008. |
| On the south
side of Stuttgart (Arkansas County), there was damage to at least 200
homes and 50 businesses. |

Coordinate Files of Tornadoes |
|
| Where exactly did the tornadoes track? The National
Weather Service obtained data on the road (ground surveys)
and through interviews with people in affected areas. A KMZ
(compressed KML) file has been constructed using points visited. The points
were plotted using mapping software. Shapefiles
(ZIP file) are available as well.
