Severe Weather/Heavy Rain on May 26-27, 2008
 
The weather pattern featured a ridge of high pressure building in the Plains on May 26-28, 2008. High pressure began building to the west of the region on the 26th/27th. This created a northwest wind flow aloft, with a front slowly riding the flow into Arkansas.

Ahead of the front, scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms developed across northern and central Arkansas during the afternoon and evening of the 26th. Precipitation continued through the morning hours of the 27th. The WSR-88D (Doppler Weather Radar) showed showers and thunderstorms popping up in northern and central Arkansas at 506 pm CDT on 05/26/2008.

Some storms were severe, with large hail noted. Quarter size hail was reported just northwest of Quitman (Cleburne County), with penny size hail a couple of miles west of Morrilton (Conway County).

There was also some wind damage. Trees and power lines were downed south of Hot Springs (Garland County) toward the Diamondhead (Hot Spring County) community.

 

Twenty four hour rainfall through 7 am CDT on 05/27/2008.

There was heavy rain as well, with more than two inches of precipitation at several locations.

Twenty four hour rainfall amounts through 7 am CDT on the 27th included 2.73 inches at Jasper (Newton County), 2.72 inches at Damascus (Van Buren County), 2.44 inches at Greers Ferry Dam (Cleburne County), 2.21 inches at Hot Springs (Garland County), and 2.02 inches at Ozone (Johnson County).

Flash flooding was reported in the Russellville (Pope County) and Hot Springs (Garland County) areas, with water over roads.
