Severe Weather/Heavy Rain on May 26-27, 2008 |

High pressure began building to the west of the region on
the 26th/27th. This created a northwest wind flow aloft, with a front
slowly riding the flow into Arkansas. |
| In the
picture: The weather pattern featured a ridge of high pressure
building in the Plains on May 26-28, 2008. East of the
ridge, a northwest wind flow aloft pushed a front through Arkansas. |
| Ahead of the front, scattered to numerous showers and
thunderstorms developed across northern and central Arkansas during the
afternoon and evening of the 26th. Precipitation continued through the
morning hours of the 27th. |

picture: The WSR-88D (Doppler Weather Radar) showed showers
and thunderstorms popping up in northern and central Arkansas at 506 pm CDT on 05/26/2008. At
500
pm CDT, temperatures were mainly in the mid 80s to lower 90s, with
mid/upper 70s toward the Missouri border. |
| Some storms were severe, with large hail noted. Quarter
size hail was reported just northwest of Quitman (Cleburne County), with
penny size hail a couple of miles west of Morrilton (Conway County).
There was also some wind damage. Trees and power lines were downed south
of Hot Springs (Garland County) toward the Diamondhead (Hot Spring County)
community. |

There was heavy rain as well, with more than two inches
of precipitation at several locations. |

| Twenty four hour rainfall amounts through 7 am CDT on the
27th included 2.73 inches at Jasper (Newton County), 2.72 inches at
Damascus (Van Buren County), 2.44 inches at Greers Ferry Dam (Cleburne
County), 2.21 inches at Hot Springs (Garland County), and 2.02 inches at
Ozone (Johnson County). Flash flooding was reported in the Russellville
(Pope County) and Hot Springs (Garland County) areas, with water over roads. |

winds and spotty flash flooding across northern and central Arkansas on May 26th
