NEAR TO ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATION IN MARCH      

 

 With the aid of many days with precipitation in March, the total precipitation for the month was near to above normal. In fact, Tri-Cities broke a rainfall record during the month. Snow was reported a few times. Tri-Cities reported a total of 1.4 inches of snow for the month. Knoxville ended with 1.2 inches of snow for the month, while Chattanooga had a trace. Mount LeConte was blanketed with a total of 51.5 inches of snow for the month

 

Chattanooga received 4.71 inches of precipitation in March, which was 0.27 inches below normal. It ranked in the middle one-third of Marchs on record. Measurable precipitation occurred on 10 days, and 7 of those days had more than one-quarter of an inch of precipitation. The heaviest precipitation fell on the 24th when 1.12 inches was recorded. The wettest March of the 133 years of observations taken was in 1980 when 16.32 inches of precipitation was recorded.

 

Knoxville received 5.49 inches of precipitation in March, which was 1.15 inches above normal. It ranked in the middle-one third of Marchs on record. Measurable precipitation occurred on 11 days and 7 of those days had more than one-quarter of an inch of precipitation. The heaviest precipitation fell on the 5th when 1.43 inches of precipitation was reported. The wettest March of the 141 years of observations taken in Knoxville was in 1917 when 13.35 inches of precipitation was recorded.


Tri-Cities received 4.62 inches of precipitation in March, which was 1.18 inches above normal. It ranked as the 18th wettest March on record. Measurable precipitation occurred on 14 days and 5 of those days had more than one-quarter of an inch of precipitation. The heaviest precipitation fell on the 5th when 1.23 inches of precipitation was reported. In addition, a precipitation record was broken on the 24th when 0.78 inches of precipitation was recorded, breaking the previous record of 0.64 inches set in 1980. The wettest March of the 73 years of observations taken at Tri-Cities was in 1955 when 9.56 inches of precipitation was recorded.

 

               BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES IN MARCH

 

Despite a few warm days in March, the monthly- averaged temperature ended up below normal. In fact, Tri-Cities tied a record low temperature in the month.

 

The monthly-averaged temperature at Chattanooga in March was 47.0 degrees which was 5.2 degrees below normal. The coldest March at Chattanooga was back in 1960 when the average temperature was 39.0 degrees.

 

The monthly-averaged temperature at Knoxville in March was 44.0 degrees which was 6.3 degrees below normal. The coldest March at Knoxville was back in 1960 when the average temperature was 36.8.

 

The monthly-averaged temperature at Tri-Cities in March was 40.7 degrees which was 6.0 degrees below normal. In addition, a low temperature record was tied on the 22nd when the temperature dipped to 16 degrees tying the record set in 1986. The coldest March at Tri-Cities was back in 1960 when the average temperature was 33.5 degrees.
