BELOW-NORMAL RAINFALL IN APRIL

- Despite a few days with moderate to heavy rain, the monthly-total rainfall was below normal for April. No daily rainfall records were broken.

  • Chattanooga received 3.22 inches of rain in April, which was 1.01 inches below normal. It ranked in the middle one-third of the 130 years of observations taken in April at Chattanooga. Measurable rain occurred on only ten days, and only five of those days had more than one-quarter of an inch of rain. The heaviest precipitation fell on the 27th, when 1.17 inches of rain was recorded. The driest April at Chattanooga was back in 1942, when only 0.44 inches was recorded.

  • Knoxville received 3.74 inches of rain in April, which was 0.25 inches below normal. It ranked in the middle one-third of the 138 years of observations taken in April at Knoxville. Measurable rain occurred on only ten days, and only five of those days had more than one-quarter of an inch of rain. The heaviest rainfall fell on the 27th, when 0.76 inches of rain was recorded. The driest April at Knoxville was back in 1976, when only 0.39 inches was recorded.

  • Tri-Cities received 2.84 inches of rain in April, which was 0.39 inches below normal. It ranked as the 27th driest April on record at Tri-Cities. Measurable rain occurred on only ten days, and only four of those days had more than one-quarter of an inch. The heaviest rain fell on the 5th, when 0.71 inches of rain was reported. The driest April of the 71 years of observations taken at Tri-Cities, was back in 1976 when only 0.21 inches was recorded.
ABOVE-NORMAL TEMPERATURES IN APRIL

- Despite the daily temperatures fluctuating considerably in April, the monthly-averaged temperatures ended up above normal. As a result of two of the cold outbreaks, Tri-Cities broke one daily low temperature record and tied another. No daily temperature records were broken at either Chattanooga or Knoxville.

  • The monthly-averaged temperature at Chattanooga was 61.0 degrees, which was 1.4 degrees above normal. It ranked in the middle one-third of observations taken in April at Chattanooga. The warmest April at Chattanooga was back in 1954, when the average temperature was 65.6 degrees.

  • The monthly-averaged temperature at Knoxville was 59.2 degrees, which was 1.4 degrees above normal. It ranked in the middle one-third of observations taken in April at Knoxville. The warmest April at Knoxville was back in 2006, when the average temperature was 65.3 degrees.

  • The monthly-averaged temperature at Tri-Cities was 56.0 degrees, which was 1.4 degrees above normal. It ranked in the middle one-third of observations taken in April at Tri-Cities. A low temperature record was tied on the 16th when the overnight low dipped to 27 degrees, tying the previous record set in 1950. In addition, a low temperature record was broken on the last day of the month when the thermometer reading fell to 30 degrees, breaking the previous record of 30 degrees set in 1964. The warmest April at Tri-Cities was back in 1954, when the average temperature was 61.8 degrees.
