Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Employment in Meteorology (and education for employment)

Can I volunteer or do an internship at your office?

Possibly, but openings are quite limited (and, at the present time, volunteer positions are not available at the Norman NWS office). Entry-level positions include "meteorologist intern" (paid, full-time, rotating-shift schedule), "co-op student" or "SCEP" (paid, part-time, variable schedule), and "student volunteer" (not paid, part-time, flexible schedule). Applications for the meteorologist intern position must be made as described in How do I get a job in the National Weather Service?). Co-op students are hired occasionally and are typically University of Oklahoma students who are well-established in their studies, and are typically seniors or graduate students. This is a very competitive position (and currently not available at the Norman office). Volunteer positions are relatively easy to obtain at most NWS offices, although they are not currently available at the Norman office.
