SMG Receives Aviation Award
The Spaceflight Meteorology Group was recently selected as the recipient of the NWS Southern Region Aviation Award. The award is selected every 3 months. SMG was selected for implementing new mission simulations in addition to standard NASA Mission Control Center simulations. The new simulations allowed SMG forecasters to use live weather for analysis and forecast operations at all times. Other SMG personnel and guest NASA staff play the roles of mission controllers. NASA flight controllers and flight directors were impressed with the new simulations. NASA Space Shuttle Flight Director Richard Jones stated "These SMG weather simulations are exceptional training opportunities. They have improved my ability to understand weather and weather-based decisions, and practice with the weather team." Read more about the award in the NWS Southern Region press release.
