Future of the Spaceflight Meteorology Group
With the end of the Space Shuttle program SMG will be undergoing numerous changes. NWS Southern Region has an
excellent article describing the emergency
response work that most of the staff will transition to in the very near future.
Some Space Shuttle Funded Weather Data No Longer Available
With the end of the Space Shuttle program some of the unique meteorological data for Space Shuttle operations will gradually disappear. On October 18 the automated weather observations uplinked through GOES-East from Zaragoza, Spain was terminated with the decomissioning of the data collection platform. The DCP at Moron, Spain will be decommissioned in the next two to three weeks. As of October 11, 0716 UTC data from the Istres, France automated weather station (WMO Bulletin SXFR30 EUMS) is no longer available. Data from the Moron and Zaragoza, Spain stations will be terminated sometime before the end of November 2011. The KSC Soil Moisture and Visibility Network data was terminated in August.
