TRANSFER OF TSUNAMI PRODUCTS FOR PUERTO RICO AND VIRGIN ISLANDS FROM THE NATIONAL TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER (NTWC) TO THE PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER (PTWC)Effective March 1, 2016SCN15-55
Amended to April 1, 2016
To be determined
The US National Weather Service established the Caribbean Tsunami Warning Program (CTWP) in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico in 2010 in support of the Tsunami and Other Coastal Warning System for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions.
The office supports an increased capability of the tsunami observational system and the continued enhancement of tsunami outreach and education capacity, including the implementation of the TsunamiReady® Program.
Within NOAA we work closely with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and the National Tsunami Warning Center which are currently providing tsunami services to the Caribbean, the International Tsunami Information Center, the NWS San Juan Forecast Office responsible for disseminating tsunami products to Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands and the National Ocean Service for water level monitoring.
The CTWP also participates and supports activities of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission's Intergovernmental Coordination Group for Tsunamis and Other Coastal Hazards Warning System for the Caribbean Sea and Adjacent Regions (CARIBE EWS). The CARIBE EWS covers 48 states and territories in the Caribbean and Western Atlantic.
The CTWP coordinates efforts with the Caribbean Tsunami Information Center (Barbados) as well as working closely with the seismic, sea level and GPS operators and the designated National Tsunami Warning Focal Points and Tsunami National Contacts. It is staffed by one full time Scientist/Manager and Students.
Efforts are made to have resources available in English, Spanish and French. The Program organizes and participates in training sessions and provides briefings and materials for use by the general public, government, scientists andbroadcast media.
The CTWP is collocated with the Puerto Rico Seismic Network at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez.
